From New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author, Marquita Valentine, comes the 4th book in her new adult series, BOYS OF THE SOUTH. There’s only one place in the world Lacey Evans feels normal- the roller derby track. When she laces up her skates and fastens her helmet, she’s powerful and in charge. She knows exactly what to do and what to say. The rules are clear and penalties are enforced for those who don’t follow them. But in the read world, she’s far from powerful and in charge. She never knows exactly what to do and say. For years, she counted on one person to be exactly who he said he was–her best friend, Wyatt Tanaka. Only she changed the rules on him, without any warning, and now she’s the one being punished. Marine veteran, Wyatt Tanaka, came home to a heroes welcome. But he’s hiding a secret, one that could potential destroy his life. He’s doing the best he can, trying to cope with the guilt and the pain of the girl he loves pushing him away by doing all the things he’d sworn not too. Women, bars, drugs and drinking are what consume him. With Lacey’s new rules, he has nothing to hold on to. Nothing to keep in from feeling dead. Then one night, he goes too far, gets in too deep, and when the truth comes out… will Lacey keep pushing him away or help save him?
**My Review**
Wish For You by Marquita Valentine is the fourth book in the Boys of the South Series. I have not read the other three books in the series but Wish For You can be read as a stand alone book. Having read this book I certainly will go back and read the books I’ve missed. I loved this book for many reasons but mostly because of the main characters Lacey & Wyatt. They are both very strong characters externally but internally they are flawed. Lacey has been plagued by panic attacks her entire life and Wyatt, a war hero, has PTSD. Both are trying to cope, in their own ways, with their spiraling emotions as well as their evolving friendship. All of this while trying to deal with their changing lives in general. Lacey is pushing Wyatt away and Wyatt only wants to hold her closer. Wyatt feels constantly rejected by Lacey and starts “acting out” his frustrations. But, after getting into some serious trouble and revealing his ugly truths will Lacey forgive & forget and finally allow herself to love & be loved or keep Wyatt at an arms length?
I loved that the author chose strong characters but also chose to give them flaws that are prevalent in today’s society. You hear of so many war veterans returning home with PTSD and are not getting the help they need. They turn their anxiety, pain and frustrations into negative activities and follow a dangerous path. Many do not have friends, like Lacey, or support systems to lean on. And so many people, young & old, suffer in silence from debilitating panic attacks. They are embarrassed or afraid to seek help and many do not have a friend, like Wyatt, to help them through their ordeals. This lack of support can cause tremendous damage to a person’s well being.
I also thought the author did a nice job with the main character’s interaction and chemistry. There was the right blend of tenderness and heat between them. I did feel that a few times throughout the book the story became choppy and interrupted the normal flow of the book. But, overall I enjoyed the story enough that it made me want to read the author’s other books in the series. **4/5 Stars**
